Tiago Santos Scout Report — Lille’s Right-Back Whose Season Ended with a Second ACL Tear
Lille OSC’s Portuguese right-back Tiago Santos, signed from Estoril for €6.5 million in the summer of 2023, had finally established himself as the club’s undisputed first-choice at right-back in 2026-27 — only for his season to end on 10 October 2026 with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee against Le Havre. Born in Lisbon on 23 July 2002 and of Angolan descent, the 24-year-old defender stands 1.75m and is right-footed; in his fourth season at Lille, this was the second serious knee injury of his career.
From Sporting’s Academy to Estoril, and on to Lille
Santos began in Sporting CP’s academy (2009-2017), had brief spells at Oeiras and Sacavenense, then returned to Sporting’s youth ranks in 2019. Moving to Estoril’s U23 side in 2021, he was promoted to the first team on 9 July 2022 and made his Primeira Liga debut on 19 August 2022 in a 2-2 draw with Rio Ave, going on to win the league’s Young Player of the Month award in April 2023. After 30 league appearances for Estoril, Benfica had an offer of around €5 million accepted by the club in the summer of 2023, but the deal collapsed when Sporting invoked an anti-rival clause written into Santos’s contract requiring a €20 million payment should he join Benfica or Porto. Lille stepped in instead, signing him on 5 July 2023 on a five-year deal for a reported €6.5 million. He made his debut for Les Dogues on 11 August 2023 in a 1-1 draw at Nice and scored his first professional goal on 26 November 2023 in a 2-0 win at Lyon.
From the Conference League to the Champions League: Four Seasons
Santos made 41 appearances and scored 3 goals across all competitions in his debut campaign (2023-24), featuring regularly as Lille ran in the Europa Conference League. His 2024-25 season was largely wiped out by a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee suffered in training in October 2024, limiting him to just 12 appearances (5 of them in the Champions League). Returning for Lille’s pre-season camp in the summer of 2025, he spent 2025-26 re-establishing his fitness and form, making 28 appearances in all (15 in the league, 2 in the cup, 11 in the Europa League) without a goal. The breakthrough came in 2026-27: under new head coach Davide Ancelotti, Santos became the clear first-choice right-back, starting all six of Lille’s opening six Ligue 1 matches, scoring once, and also starting the club’s opening Champions League fixture — taking his season tally to two goals before injury struck, the most consistent start of his career.
10 October: A Second ACL Tear, and Lille’s Response
That rise came to an abrupt halt in Lille’s Ligue 1 match against Le Havre on 10 October 2026. Following a challenge from Le Havre midfielder Amir Richardson, Santos suffered a ruptured ACL and meniscus damage in his right knee and was stretchered off in tears. Lille described the tackle as “uncontrolled and dangerous,” referred the matter to the French Football Federation (FFF) and the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), asked the league to refer the incident to its disciplinary committee, and reserved the right to pursue legal action for compensation — while also pledging support for any steps Santos himself might take to defend his rights. Le Havre pushed back, noting that neither the referee nor VAR deemed the challenge worthy of a card during the match, and argued that retroactive punishment would fall outside league regulations. Santos is expected to miss the remainder of the season — the second ACL rupture of his career in two years.
A Wait for the National Team, and the Man Filling the Gap: Maxima Goffi
Santos, whose Portuguese roots trace to Angola through his father, made his Portugal U21 debut on 8 September 2023 in a 3-0 win over Andorra in 2025 U21 Euro qualifying, going on to earn 5 caps at that level. He received his first senior call-up in September 2024, for Nations League matches against Croatia and Scotland, but has yet to win a senior cap. In his absence, Lille’s emergency solution at right-back has been 18-year-old academy centre-back Maxima Goffi: having signed his first professional contract on 15 May 2025 and made his first-team debut on 17 August 2025 in a 3-3 draw with Brest, Goffi made his first career start at right-back — not his natural position — in the Champions League away to Arsenal on 13 October 2026, a match Lille lost 3-0.
At 24, and despite two major knee injuries, Santos remains a proven right-back by Ligue 1 and European standards — a technically composed defender who stands out more for positioning and attacking range than raw physicality. The real question for Lille is how it manages the position in his absence; shifting a natural centre-back there on an emergency basis looks far from a lasting solution.
