Kento Shiogai Scout Report: From NEC’s Super Sub to Wolfsburg’s Japanese Forward
Yazı Özetini Göster

I first noted Kento Shiogai at the 2024 Maurice Revello Tournament, where he scored a hat-trick against Italy and finished as top scorer with five goals in five games. Two years on, the Tokyo-born forward has moved via NEC Nijmegen to Germany and VfL Wolfsburg, and made Japan’s squad for the 2026 World Cup. This file on the 21-year-old assesses his rapid rise and his first spell in Germany using public data. It contains no transfer recommendation.

GP SCOREA Japanese forward who showed high scoring efficiency in the Eredivisie, moved to the Bundesliga and made a World Cup squad at 21.
Shiogai’s most distinctive technical trait is finishing inside the box. In the first half of the 2025-26 season at NEC he scored 7 goals in 12 league games, many of them off the bench, and the Dutch press labelled him a ‘super sub’. His ability to score in short spells points to good positioning and one-touch finishing. The youth record shows the same pattern: 10 goals in 18 games for Japan U18 and U19 combined.
He has been used as a centre-forward and as a second striker. After a brief seven-game spell in J1 with Yokohama F. Marinos, he joined NEC in summer 2024 and played 25 league games in his first Eredivisie season. His role was mostly that of a late substitute making runs in behind the last line. At Wolfsburg from January 2026 he took on a similar rotation role; most of his 12 Bundesliga appearances came from the bench.
At 1.80 m he is an agile forward. Acceleration over short distances and runs behind the defence form the physical basis of his output relative to minutes. He is not a dominant aerial presence. He received minutes from his first months in the more physical Bundesliga, and public sources show no record of long-term injury.
Yokohama F. Marinos 2024: J1 League 7 games, 1 goal. NEC 2024-25: Eredivisie 25 games, 4 goals; 28 games, 5 goals in all competitions. NEC 2025-26 (first half): Eredivisie 12 games, 7 goals; cup 2 games, 2 goals. Wolfsburg 2025-26: Bundesliga 12 games, 1 goal (first goal 21 February 2026 away at Augsburg), relegation play-off 1 game. Wolfsburg 2026-27: 2. Bundesliga 5 games, 0 goals; cup 1 game (as of mid-September). Career total: 68 games, 16 goals. Japan: U18 9 games, 4 goals; U19 9 games, 6 goals; U23 3 games; senior team 6 caps, 1 goal (first goal 24 September 2026, 3-1 v Uruguay). 2024 Maurice Revello Tournament top scorer (5 goals in 5 games).

Strengths

The first is scoring efficiency relative to minutes: 9 goals in 14 games for NEC in the first half of 2025-26. The second is finishing proven at tournament level; the Revello golden boot and his first senior international goal. The third is rapid career progression; at 21 he has played in three different leagues (J1, Eredivisie, Bundesliga). The fourth is his ability to come off the bench and affect a game quickly.

Weaknesses and Development Areas

The first development area is output in Germany; 1 goal in 12 Bundesliga games, and no goals in his first 5 games in the 2. Bundesliga in 2026-27. The second is starting minutes; he has spent most of his career as a rotation player and data on full 90-minute workloads is limited. The third is his contribution to build-up play and aerial duels; his profile rests mainly on finishing.

Career Projection and Contract Status

Wolfsburg activated the release clause in his NEC contract in January 2026 and signed him on a 4.5-year deal; according to the press the fee was around 10 million euros (9 million fixed plus 1 million in bonuses). The contract runs until June 2030. The club competing in the 2. Bundesliga in 2026-27 could mean more opportunities for minutes. His place in the Japan senior squad and his age of 21 suggest the next two seasons will be decisive for his development.

GP VERDICTKEEP ON WATCHLIST

A 21-year-old forward who stood out for scoring efficiency in the Netherlands, made Japan's World Cup squad and has yet to reach that output level in Germany.

Securing regular starting minutes at Wolfsburg and carrying his Eredivisie scoring efficiency into German football.
