Alexandre Lauray Scout Report: Le Mans FC Defensive Midfielder
Academy Nations League series — France (Ligue 1): Le Mans FC
Our scouting reports on Le Mans FC have covered the goalkeeper (Nicolas Kocik), a centre-back (Harold Voyer), the right-back (Djibril Sidibé) and the left-back (Lucas Calodat). The fifth file moves into midfield with the man who sits in front of the back line for a club that has just climbed from Ligue 2: 29-year-old Frenchman Alexandre Lauray. The original Turkish edition is here.

Quick scouting answer: Alexandre Lauray (born 18 March 1997 in Les Sables-d’Olonne, 1.75 m, right-footed) wears No. 8 for Le Mans FC. FotMob lists him as a defensive midfielder first and a central midfielder second; Wikipedia describes him as a right-back or centre-back and lists him as captain. He came through Toulouse and Bordeaux, made his Ligue 1 debut for Bordeaux in 2019, was loaned to Dunkerque and Villefranche, and joined Le Mans on a free in August 2021. In 2026-27 he has played 358 minutes across 6 Ligue 1 matches (4 starts): 10 tackles, 8 interceptions, 18 recoveries, 75.7% passing, no goals or assists yet. His contract expires on 30 June 2027 and his market value sits between roughly €354k and €587k depending on the source. GegenSports score: 62/100. Profile: a cheap, experienced screening midfielder — a depth piece, not a headline signing.

Career and transfer history
Lauray’s route is the familiar one of a youth-system player who never quite settled in the top flight and rebuilt himself lower down. He joined Toulouse’s academy in 2011 and played 39 league games for Toulouse II between 2014 and 2018, without scoring. He moved to Bordeaux in 2018 (18 games for Bordeaux II), made his Ligue 1 debut on 14 April 2019 in a 3-0 defeat at Saint-Étienne, and signed a first three-year professional contract that July. Three Ligue 1 appearances for Bordeaux were his entire top-flight record until this season.
Two loans followed: Dunkerque in 2019-20 (about 20-21 league games, no goals) and Villefranche Beaujolais from September 2020 (27-30 games depending on the source, one goal). On 9 August 2021 he left Bordeaux as a free agent for Le Mans. No fee was involved; Soccerway records the move as a free transfer.

Totals at Le Mans differ by source: Wikipedia has 104 league games and 3 goals as of 11 May 2026, FotMob has 121 and 4, probably because it counts every competition. We show both as a range rather than choosing one.
Season by season at Le Mans
Soccerway’s league tables show Lauray with 1 National game in 2021-22, 14 in 2023-24 (1 goal, 2 yellows), 30 in 2024-25 (1 goal, 4 assists, 8 yellows) and 32 in Ligue 2 in 2025-26 (2 assists, 14 yellows). The 2022-23 season is missing. That fits with Wikipedia’s note of a serious injury in a July 2022 friendly, though none of the sources explicitly links the two. What stands out is that he was part of the squad for both promotions, National to Ligue 2 and then Ligue 2 to Ligue 1.

2026-27 Ligue 1 statistics
FotMob has Lauray at 6 matches (4 starts), 358 minutes, 0 goals (expected goals, xG: 0.14), 0 assists (expected assists, xA: 0.39), an average rating of 6.73 and 3 yellow cards.

*Calculated by GegenSports from 358 minutes. That is only about four full matches of data, so read it as a tendency, not a verdict.
Match by match: Brest 2-2 (63 minutes, 6.4), a 3-2 defeat at Rennes (90, 7.3, his season high), Nice 1-1 away (90, 7.2), Lens 2-2 away (25, 6.6), a 2-1 home win over Lorient (18, 6.5), a 3-1 defeat at PSG (72, 6.3), and an unused substitute in the 0-3 home loss to Toulouse. The minutes add up: 63+90+90+25+18+72 = 358. His two ratings above 7 came in full 90-minute shifts, which suggests he looks best when Le Mans can hold shape rather than chase games.

Playing style
The numbers describe an anchor midfielder — the player who sits just in front of the centre-backs, wins the ball back and sets the tempo — with a ball-winner’s habits. Nothing in the public record sells him as a creative passer, and the data agrees: 75.7% passing is acceptable for a No. 6 under Ligue 1 pressure but not elite, while 1.8 chances created per 90 shows that not every pass stays in safe zones. Roughly 4.5 recoveries per 90 and about 8 defensive contributions suggest a solid zone-coverage workload.
Press resistance means keeping the ball when opponents close you down. Lauray handles it by passing early rather than dribbling out; his 2 successful dribbles (66.7%) are a tiny sample, but they point to someone who prefers to release the ball. The half-space is the vertical lane between the centre and the touchline; modern No. 6s earn their keep by receiving there and turning play forward. His chance-creation rate suggests he occasionally plays the final pass from that lane, although open data can’t tell us how much of that is by design.
Defending: 8 interceptions and 10 tackles is a balanced split, so he both reads passing lanes and steps in. The catch is a 47.5% duel success rate and 3 yellow cards in 358 minutes, which implies some tackles arrive late. Over 2025-26 he collected 10 yellows by FotMob’s count and 14 by Soccerway’s. The sources disagree, but both show discipline as a recurring issue.
Aerial and positional flexibility: 5 aerial wins (55.6%) and 13 clearances show involvement in set pieces and second balls despite his 1.75 m frame. Wikipedia’s listing of him as a right-back or centre-back points to earlier spells in those roles, giving Le Mans cover options.

Le Mans FC context
Le Mans finished second in Ligue 2 in 2025-26 and clinched promotion with a 2-0 win at Bastia on the final day, returning to the top flight after roughly seventeen years under head coach Patrick Videira. FotMob shows Lauray as an unused substitute that day, although he played 79 minutes and recorded an assist in a 1-1 draw with Reims the week before (rated 7.8). In a side now meeting PSG, Rennes, Nice and Lens, the No. 6’s job is not scoring; it is to protect the centre-backs and full-backs by winning duels and plugging the gaps between the lines. Four starts from six appearances make him a key rotation piece, though his minutes shrink when results go badly. Jean Vercruysse (384 minutes) and Adil Bourabaa (393) are the main midfield competition per Starting11. Captain Edwin Quarshie had not featured in Ligue 1 at the time of writing and was marked as out, which makes Lauray’s load more understandable. Reports differ on who actually wears the armband.
Strengths
- Ball-winning volume: about 4.5 recoveries and 8 defensive contributions per 90 show real sweeping work.
- Reading of passes: 8 interceptions in 358 minutes means he doesn’t rely only on tackling.
- Versatility: listings as a full-back or centre-back give a manager injury and suspension cover.
- Institutional memory: five seasons at the club and through both promotions.
- Acceptable in the air: 55.6% of aerial duels won offsets his lack of height.
- Cost: a €354k-€587k value and an expiring deal make the risk-reward attractive.
Weaknesses
- Discipline: 3 yellows in 358 minutes (one every ~119 minutes) and 10-14 yellows in 2025-26.
- Duel rate: 47.5% is below what you’d want from a holding midfielder against Ligue 1 physicality.
- Attacking output: only 4 league goals and 6 assists in his career, with xG 0.14 and xA 0.39 this season.
- Age and ceiling: 29, with a peak market value of €430k in 2018 — no resale upside.
- Minutes volatility: two of six appearances were 25 minutes or fewer, and he was left on the bench against Toulouse.
- Thin top-flight sample: 3 games for Bordeaux plus 6 this season is not much evidence at this level.
GegenSports score: 62/100
We score three axes: defensive output (strong, 68/100), distribution and first pass (average, 58/100) and discipline and availability (weak-to-average, 52/100). Age and low resale value pull the final grade down. This score is GegenSports’ own and not copied from FM or any other platform; with only 358 minutes it should be revisited as the season goes on.
Similar players (role-based)
These are role comparisons, not statistical matches, and current clubs may have changed.
- Pierre Lees-Melou: a long-time Ligue 1 midfielder who blends passing and duelling. Similar in lane-reading and balanced role; he creates and shoots more.
- Mahdi Camara: a No. 6 known for coverage and ball-winning volume. Similar screening job; younger and more physically dominant.
- Valentin Rongier: a tough, versatile French midfielder. Similar age profile and duel-based role; steadier in attack.
Süper Lig fit and suitable Turkish clubs
The Süper Lig rewards fast transitions and wing-heavy play, so a No. 6 needs coverage and positional discipline. Lauray’s recovery volume and aerial help fit, but his card habit and 47.5% duel rate are risks in a league with fierce rivalries. Profile-wise, the best match is a club that wants squad depth rather than a first-choice starter, such as Konyaspor, Kayserispor, Kasımpaşa or Gaziantep FK-type structures (check current top-flight status each summer). He doesn’t look like a starter for Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe, Beşiktaş or Trabzonspor. Adaptation score: 64/100 — easy football adjustment as a Frenchman, some language and climate friction in the first six months.
Ideal teammates
He works best next to a forward-running No. 8 (box-to-box or attacking midfielder) with quick, aerially strong centre-backs behind him. As a lone pivot in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 his duel rate is a worry; in a double pivot next to a ball-carrier he should be more comfortable.
Cost and value-for-money scenarios
His deal ends on 30 June 2027. As a general rule, players in the last six months of a contract may negotiate with foreign clubs (have your legal team confirm current rules), so a free move from 1 January 2027 is plausible. We don’t invent offers; the €354k-€587k range simply frames the ceiling:
- Scenario A — pre-contract in January 2027: no fee, only wages and signing bonus; best value for money.
- Scenario B — small January fee: an estimated low six-figure sum depending on Le Mans’ rotation needs; this is an estimate, not a verified bid.
- Scenario C — summer 2027 free agent: no fee, though Le Mans may offer an extension first.
Development potential
At 29 this is a stable, predictable profile rather than a growth story. He can hold his level for two or three more seasons; if discipline improves and duel success moves above 50%, he becomes a firmer rotation starter in Ligue 1. Resale value shouldn’t be expected to rise.
Injury record and availability
Wikipedia reports a serious injury in a July 2022 friendly that kept him out for a long period. There’s no reported active injury in 2026-27. Availability concerns are card-driven: 10-14 yellows in 2025-26 mean suspension risk. In 2025-26 he logged roughly 1,425-1,515 minutes across 32 league games, about 45-47 per appearance, so he is not an automatic starter.
Foreign-player status and UK work permit
As a French citizen he counts as a foreign player in Turkey; the TFF’s foreign-player quota and squad rules change season to season, so check the current regulations. In England the post-Brexit Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) system is points-based; a player with no senior caps has a weak automatic route, though club-level and league-level criteria may support an exception. This is not legal advice — clubs should confirm with their legal departments.
Suitable leagues
- Süper Lig (Turkey): clubs wanting a cheap rotation No. 6.
- Ligue 1 / Ligue 2 (France): his current level; mid-to-lower-table rotation.
- Belgian Pro League: physical, fast football suits screening roles.
- Swiss Super League: budget-friendly clubs for a similar profile.
- Second-tier leagues: England’s Championship or Spain’s Segunda, where his numbers could hold (work-permit limits aside).
Sporting director summary
Monitor into January: Lauray suits clubs that want a role-player No. 6, not a star. Pros: ball-winning volume, versatility, near-zero cost. Cons: card habit, a 47.5% duel rate, limited attacking contribution. Treat him as depth, and when the pre-contract window opens in January 2027 commission three or four more matches of video and watch his tackle timing closely.
