Nabil Bentaleb Scout Report — Lille’s Midfield Engine After a Comeback from Cardiac Arrest
Algerian-French midfielder Nabil Bentaleb, signed by Lille OSC from Angers in the summer of 2023, has established himself as the first-choice holding midfielder in Davide Ancelotti’s 4-2-3-1 this season, wearing the number 6 shirt. Born on 24 November 1994 in Lille to Algerian parents from Mostaganem, the 31-year-old stands at 1.87m and has become a symbolic figure in French football following his return to the pitch after suffering a cardiac arrest in the summer of 2024; on 30 July 2026 he signed a new contract with the club running until 2028.
From Lille’s Academy to the Premier League, Schalke and Angers
Bentaleb began his football journey at AJS Wazemmes in his hometown of Lille, progressed through Lille’s own academy between 2004 and 2009, had brief spells at Mouscron and Dunkerque, and joined Tottenham Hotspur’s academy in 2012. At Spurs between 2013 and 2017 he made 46 league appearances (66 in all competitions, scoring once) and signed a new five-year contract with the club in 2015. He joined Schalke 04 on loan in the summer of 2016, scoring 7 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions in a single season, which prompted a permanent transfer to the Bundesliga side on 24 February 2017; across his time at Schalke (including the loan spell) he totalled 107 official appearances and 19 goals, and won the Bundesliga Goal of the Season award for 2016-17 for his strike against Augsburg. After a loan spell at Newcastle United in 2019-20 (12 league appearances), he moved to Angers in France on 6 January 2022 on a two-and-a-half-year deal, recording 51 appearances and 5 goals for the club across all competitions.
Return From Cardiac Arrest and a Goal “Worthy of a Film”
Having signed a three-year contract with Lille on 28 August 2023, Bentaleb suffered a cardiac arrest shortly after his first season at the club, in June 2024, and was told his career might be over. Sidelined for more than seven months, he was cleared to return to competitive football by the French Football Federation’s cardiology team on 12 February 2025; he came on as a 76th-minute substitute away at Rennes on 16 February 2025 and scored four minutes later, a moment then-manager Bruno Genesio described as “worthy of a film.”
2026-27 Season: Partnering Mukau in Ancelotti’s Double Pivot
Wearing the number 6 under Davide Ancelotti in 2026-27, Bentaleb has made 9 Ligue 1 appearances so far (8 starts), playing 703 minutes and recording 1 assist, with a FotMob season average rating of 7.18 — one of the squad’s most consistent performers; he rated 8.1 in the 1-0 win over Lens on 30 October and 7.6 against Troyes on 13 September. Partnering young DR Congolese-Belgian midfielder Ngal’ayel Mukau in Ancelotti’s preferred double pivot, Bentaleb has established himself ahead of club captain Benjamin André for the role; according to a report by Maxifoot in October, Ancelotti told the 36-year-old André, limited to just 4 league appearances this season, to expect reduced playing time while still calling him “very important.” Per FotMob’s current status page, Bentaleb has been sidelined by illness since 2 November, with a return expected within 1-2 weeks; Lille’s next fixture is against Rennes.
Capped once for France at U19 level, Bentaleb has dedicated the bulk of his international career to Algeria, earning 64 caps and 6 goals since his debut on 5 March 2014; he has featured at the 2014 and 2026 World Cups as well as the 2015, 2017 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. With Lille chasing targets in both Ligue 1 and Europe this season, getting their experienced midfielder back to full fitness quickly will be a priority.
