Goalkeepers from this part of the world rarely get a clean run at European football. They arrive with a reputation built in the A-League, they sit behind an established number one, and the file goes cold. Alex Paulsen has chosen a different route: three loans in three countries in three seasons, each one a step closer to the level his parent club bought him for. That is why I reopen his file this month, now that he is wearing the number 1 shirt at Motherwell.
The details first. Full name Alexander Noah Paulsen, born 4 July 2002 in Auckland, 1.84m. He played futsal through his childhood and only committed to goalkeeping at thirteen, after starting as an outfielder, and his brother Adam plays futsal for New Zealand. He came through Eastern Suburbs and Onehunga Sports under the youth coach Hiroshi Miyazawa, then moved to the Wellington Phoenix academy at fifteen in 2018. He was named Most Valuable Player of the 2020-21 national league season with the Phoenix reserves, and signed his first professional contract in September 2021.
The season that made his name was 2023-24. He played every minute as the Phoenix finished second, the best finish in the club's history, conceding fewer goals than any Phoenix side before them. He kept a club-record eleven clean sheets in twenty-seven league matches and saved three penalties. He was named A-League Men Goalkeeper of the Year and shared the Young Footballer of the Year award with Nestory Irankunda. Bournemouth signed him in June 2024 for a reported initial fee of 850,000 pounds, rising to two million with add-ons, on a contract to the end of the 2027-28 season.
The loans tell the rest. At Auckland FC in 2024-25 he played every minute of the club's first season, won the Premiership, kept thirteen clean sheets in twenty-eight matches and was Goalkeeper of the Year again. At Lechia Gdańsk in 2025-26 he made twenty-seven appearances in Poland, but the club were relegated and the loan ended in June. Motherwell took him on 13 July 2026. He kept a clean sheet on his debut, a 2-0 win over HB Tórshavn in Conference League qualifying, and started the league campaign with a 2-1 win at Easter Road.
Internationally he has eight caps. His first senior appearance was a clean sheet against the Solomon Islands at the 2024 OFC Nations Cup, and he played the full ninety minutes of the 4-1 win over Chile in March 2026, New Zealand's first win against a CONMEBOL side. He went to the World Cup in the squad but did not play, and he was called up again for the autumn window.
Now the limits. His distribution and comfort with the ball are a real asset, and the futsal background shows. But Motherwell sit ninth after seven matches with three straight league defeats, and a keeper in a struggling side will be judged harshly in a league where Celtic and Rangers visit twice a season. He has never been a regular in a top-five European league, and his Bournemouth contract has under two years left. This loan is the audition.
Scout tavsiyesi: Monitor closely through the 2026-27 season. The A-League record is exceptional and the loans have been chosen sensibly, but the case for a top-flight European number 1 has not yet been made. If he keeps the Motherwell shirt through the winter and holds his level against the Old Firm, Bournemouth have a real decision to make with a contract that runs only to 2028.
