Australia rarely produces a pure number ten, and when it does the player usually leaves before anyone outside the A-League learns his name. Alexander Badolato is the current best version of that profile: born 2005, Sydney-raised, and the standout attacking midfielder of a Newcastle Jets side that leans on him for almost every moment of creation.
He arrived at the Jets in 2025 after passing through Western Sydney Wanderers and Melbourne Victory, and the move gave him what young Australian tens rarely get: minutes and licence. He was named AFC Youth Player of the Year and won the MVP award at the U20 Asian Cup, and those honours are not marketing. On the pitch his value is in the half-second before he receives: he checks his shoulder early, opens his body to the far side and plays the pass most A-League midfielders do not even see. His long-range striking is a real secondary weapon; he has scored more than one goal this season from outside the box with almost no backlift.
The gaps are physical and structural. At 1.75m he can be muscled off possession in transition, and his defensive positioning without the ball is still a work in progress. He drifts into pockets to find the game and occasionally leaves his midfield line short. Against organised, physical opponents his influence dips because the space he lives in disappears.
For European clubs the reading is simple. Oceania remains the most underpriced scouting region in world football, and a right-footed, left-side-favouring creator with a €600k valuation and AFC youth pedigree is exactly the kind of low-risk file a mid-table European club should open now, while the price still reflects the league and not the player.
