A defender becomes available for one of two reasons: his level dropped, or his club broke. Alphonce Omija is on the market because of the second reason, and that distinction is the whole file.
The frame first. Omija is a Kenyan centre-back, right-footed, listed at 1.85 metres, and his registration data gives 9 October 2002 as the date of birth, which makes him twenty-three. Several Kenyan outlets print an older age. I cannot reconcile the two and I will not pretend I can, so this report carries the registration date with the discrepancy attached to it. His market valuation sat around 300,000 euros while he was under contract. As of this month he holds no contract at all.
The route is East African and then North African. He came through Gor Mahia, spent part of his late teens at Kariobangi Sharks with an FKF Cup on his record from that period, and took his first move abroad to Dhofar in Oman. The dates across Kenyan profiles do not line up cleanly for those early years, which is normal for the region and worth saying out loud. What is firm is the return: he went back to Gor Mahia in June 2024 and was a regular in a side that finished second in the Kenyan Premier League. His senior Kenya debut came on 11 July 2024, a World Cup qualifier against Ivory Coast played in Lilongwe.
The tournament that made him a transfer target was CHAN 2024, played on home soil. He started twice and came off the bench twice. In the opening 1-0 win over DR Congo he cleared a shot off his own line, the moment Kenyan broadcasters replayed all tournament. In the quarter-final against Madagascar he scored with a header, and he also missed from the spot in the same tie, then apologised publicly for it. I record both halves of that night because the second one tells me as much as the first: a defender who takes the responsibility, misses, and fronts it afterwards is not a player who hides.
That form carried him to Etoile Sportive du Sahel in September 2025. He played there for a year, including a full ninety minutes in the coastal derby against US Monastir in February 2026, and by all Tunisian reporting he was a squad defender rather than a passenger. Then the club's finances took over the story. FIFA imposed a three-window registration ban on Etoile on 30 April 2026 over an unpaid transfer fee owed to Gor Mahia, and in September 2026 Omija terminated his contract by mutual consent amid unpaid salaries. He is a free agent through no failure of his own.
On the pitch my notes are consistent across the CHAN matches and the Tunisian league games I have seen. He defends the box well: he reads the line of a cross early, attacks the first ball, and he is willing to put his body where the finish is coming from. He is composed in possession without being a progressive passer; the ball leaves him sideways more often than forward. His weakness is exposed space. Turned towards his own goal and asked to recover across thirty metres, he is average rather than quick, which means a high line in a possession side is a risk. His aerial work against a physical centre-forward is a strength; his one-on-one defending in wide areas is not.
The verdict is about timing, not talent ceiling. A twenty-three-year-old international centre-back with a continental tournament behind him, a season in the Tunisian top flight, and no transfer fee attached is a rare combination on this continent, and it exists only because his last employer could not pay. The caveat is equally plain: he has just come out of a club where wages went unpaid, which affects preparation, and no buyer should assume he is match sharp today.
Scout tavsiyesi: Worth a concrete conversation now, precisely because the fee is zero. Omija is a twenty-three-year-old Kenya international centre-back with a continental tournament and a season of Tunisian top-flight football behind him, and he is available only because Etoile Sportive du Sahel could not meet its obligations. He fits a side that defends in a mid or low block and needs a first contact on crosses; he does not fit a high line that leaves thirty metres behind him. Two things must be checked before signing: current physical condition after months in a club that was not paying wages, and whether the termination is documented cleanly enough that no registration dispute follows him. If both come back clean, this is a low-cost addition with international experience already priced out of the deal.
