Indonesian football has spent the last three years rebuilding its defence from abroad. Every new squad list out of Jakarta carries another name born in the Netherlands, and the domestic academies have quietly become the least discussed part of the project. That is precisely why I keep this file open. Fajar Fathur Rahman was born in Manokwari, produced entirely inside Indonesia, and has held his place in the national conversation without a second passport to help him.
The details first. Born 29 May 2002 in Manokwari, Papua; 1.71m; right-footed, used at right-back but pushed into a wide attacking role by Borneo whenever they needed a runner on that side. He joined Borneo's senior squad in 2020 and made his professional debut on 4 September 2021 against Persebaya Surabaya. Five seasons in Samarinda produced 117 league appearances and two goals. The appearance count matters far more than the goal column here: he played through successive coaching changes without losing the shirt, and for a full-back in this league that is the single most reliable indicator I have.
The recognition came early. He was named Liga 1 Best Young Player for 2023-24 after thirty league matches and three assists, then selected in the Team of the Season in both 2023-24 and 2024-25. I weigh the second selection more heavily. One strong season can belong to the system around a player; two consecutive ones belong to the player. His 2024-25 campaign was the most productive of his career going forward - 33 appearances and five assists.
In January 2026 he left Borneo on a free transfer and signed at Persija Jakarta on a three-and-a-half-year contract running to 2029, taking the number four shirt. That move carries weight in this market. Persija is the heaviest pressure environment in the country and free arrivals there are usually judged within three months. He had eleven appearances by late April, which suggests the judgement went in his favour.
The international record is unusually full for a full-back from this region. Seven caps and two goals at under-16 level with the 2018 AFF U-16 title, five caps at under-19, then fifteen appearances and five goals at under-23 - including gold at the 2023 SEA Games, where he finished the tournament as leading scorer. A right-back topping a scoring chart tells you where his instincts sit, and it explains why coaches keep asking him to play higher than his listed position.
Now the limits, and they are real. At 1.71m he is vulnerable to direct deliveries and to strikers attacking the far post; the Southeast Asian game has become more organised at set pieces in the last three seasons and small full-backs are the first to be targeted. His positioning inside a settled defensive block is adequate rather than good - he recovers the ball far more often in transition than in a static duel. And at 24 he has never played outside Indonesia, which narrows the realistic ceiling. This is a domestic starter with regional value, not a European file, and I would rather say that plainly than dress it up.
Scout tavsiyesi: Keep on the regional watch list rather than the transfer list. He is a dependable domestic starter whose attacking output is genuine, but the physical profile and the absence of any football played outside Indonesia cap the realistic move. The decision point is whether he completes a full uninterrupted season at Persija without losing the shirt to a foreign signing.
