South Africa's production line of central midfielders keeps running, and the next name coming through the Mamelodi Sundowns system is Gomolemo Kekana. Born in July 2006, he is a midfielder who has moved through the South Africa U17 setup and into the U20 group since 2024, developing inside the most professional academy environment in the country.
Sundowns rarely rush their academy graduates, and Kekana is a good example of why patience pays. The profile is a modern central midfielder: comfortable receiving under pressure, tidy in possession and positionally schooled in the way Sundowns drill their age groups. He does not give the ball away cheaply, and he already understands when to circulate and when to step forward, an instinct many 19-year-olds lack.
The honest gaps: this is still a reserve-and-cup-minutes player rather than a settled first-teamer at a club that spends heavily on established internationals. His end product in the final third is undeveloped, and the physical step up to senior PSL intensity is the test he has not fully passed yet. Breaking into that Sundowns midfield is one of the hardest jobs in African club football.
Market note for the region: the smart play with Sundowns academy midfielders is early relationship-building, not a headline bid. Players who cannot get past the internationals ahead of them often become available on loan or at a controlled fee. Kekana is a track-and-position file: log the minutes now, and be first in the queue when the pathway opens.
Scout tavsiyesi: Track-and-position file: build the relationship early; a loan or controlled fee is the realistic route.
