I watched Juan Francisco Rossel across several Universidad Católica fixtures this season. He is listed as a centre-forward, but what stood out immediately is how little time he actually spends fixed to the last line. He drifts left, drops between the lines and links play, which tells me his coaches trust his feet as much as his finishing. For a 21-year-old who came through the Católica academy from age four, that positional intelligence is not a coincidence.
His strongest trait is the first phase of an attack. Rossel receives on the half-turn cleanly, protects the ball with his back to goal and releases wide runners without breaking stride. He is right-footed and comfortable striking early, and his movement into the left channel to become a temporary winger gives Católica a second attacking shape. In the U20 setup he captained the side, which matches what I saw: he organises the press and demands the ball in tight moments rather than hiding.
The gaps are honest ones. His raw goal return this season is modest relative to his minutes, and part of that is finishing precision under pressure. He also lost time to a physical setback, and his sharpness took a few matches to return. Against deeper blocks he can force the extra touch instead of shooting first time. None of this is structural, but it is the difference between a squad forward and a starter at a higher level.
My overall read is a versatile front player whose profile travels well. He holds dual Chile-Ecuador eligibility and chose Chile, captaining the U20s, so his ceiling has already been backed by his federation. Short term he is a Primera starter for Católica; medium term, if his finishing consistency climbs, he is a realistic export to a mid-tier European league. I am keeping him high on my Chile watchlist.
Scout tavsiyesi: Keep high on the Chile watchlist; revisit once finishing numbers stabilise.
