The Sahel keeps producing defenders who look like they were built for a different sport, and Massiré Sylla is the latest of them. A 196cm centre-back out of Senegal's Diambars academy, he is now at Belgium's Union Saint-Gilloise on a deal reported to run to 2030 after a January 2026 move. He is a physical event every time the ball goes into the air.
The obvious strength is aerial and set-piece dominance, at both ends. Few strikers win a first ball against him, and in the opposition box he is a genuine threat from corners. What raises the ceiling is that he is not a pure tower: he has been used as a defensive midfielder as well as a centre-back, which tells you his feet and composure are better than his frame suggests. He steps out and carries when the game allows.
The development questions are the ones every tall teenage defender carries. Recovery pace against sharp, quick forwards in behind is the first; his positioning and distribution still need to be scaled to a higher tactical tempo. His path — Pau in France, a breakout in Norway with Lyn, now Union SG — shows he is a project being built in stages, not a finished product.
At a valuation still under one million euros, this is a low-cost, high-ceiling defensive file. For a club that can afford a season of patience, Sylla is exactly the kind of Sahelian raw material that turns into real resale value.
Scout tavsiyesi: Low-cost, high-ceiling defensive project; buy if a season of patience is affordable.
