The most interesting striker in Southeast Asian football right now did not grow up on the continent at all. Mauro Zijlstra, born 2004, learned the game inside the Dutch pyramid — AZ, NEC and finally Volendam, where his goals helped win the 2024-25 Eerste Divisie title — before being naturalised as an Indonesian and moving to Persija Jakarta. At 1,89m he is exactly the profile the region has never mass-produced: a genuine target centre-forward.
Zijlstra plays with his back to goal the way Dutch academies teach it. He holds the ball up against two defenders, lays it off cleanly and spins into the channel without losing balance. His first-time finishing inside the box is his clearest asset; the near-post movement is schooled, not instinctive noise. For a league whose defences sit deep and physical, an aerial reference point who can also link is a structural advantage.
The honest gaps are pace and match rhythm. He is not quick over distance, so against a high line he offers less; his game lives in and around the box, not in transition. And the move from Dutch second-tier minutes to a new league, climate and tempo will take an adaptation window before the numbers stabilise.
