Soweto has a specific idea of what a number ten should look like, and every few years the PSL produces a teenager who fits it. Right now that player is Mfundo Vilakazi. Born November 2005, nicknamed “Obrigado”, he signed his professional deal with Kaizer Chiefs in 2024 and has spent the past two seasons as the club's most-discussed young footballer.
On the ball he is a throwback in the best sense. At 1.65m Vilakazi plays low to the ground, changes direction without a backlift and finds the pocket between the lines that South African defences still leave open. His first touch settles under pressure, his set-piece delivery is already a weapon, and he has the rare confidence to demand the ball in a losing game rather than hide from it. He was a central figure as South Africa's U20 side won their maiden U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in 2025 and reached the U-20 World Cup.
The honest part is exposure and body. His 2025/26 return - three goals and two assists across 21 games - reflects managed minutes as much as form; local pundits have openly questioned why a talent this size is rotated. His frame will be tested against grown professionals, his defensive contribution is light, and he can force the game when patience would serve better. These are twenty-year-old files, not flaws.
Why Europe should care: the PSL still sells its creators cheap, and Vilakazi's contract runs to June 2028, which protects Chiefs without pricing him out. Years on this continent taught me to trust the eye over the database, and the eye says the ceiling here is a top-half European playmaker. This is a market inefficiency worth opening before a good tournament closes it.
Scout tavsiyesi: Open the file before a good tournament closes it: PSL undersells creators and the 2028 contract keeps the fee sane.
