Australian strikers leave for one of three destinations. Scotland, the Dutch second tier, or a mid-table club in Belgium. That has been the map for fifteen years and every agent in this country works from it. So when a 22-year-old centre-forward signs a three-year deal in the Ukrainian Premier League and takes the number nine shirt, I stop what I am doing and open a file. Nathanael Blair is now the first Australian at Veres Rivne, and the move is unusual enough that it deserves to be read carefully rather than celebrated or dismissed.
The basics first. Nathanael Dane Blair was born on 15 March 2004 in Camperdown, New South Wales. Right-footed centre-forward, 1.86m. He came through APIA Leichhardt before signing a two-year scholarship deal with Western Sydney Wanderers on 22 June 2022, and made his A-League debut on 10 December 2022 against Wellington Phoenix. The reserve numbers from that period are the ones I keep returning to: 38 appearances and 19 goals for the Wanderers' under-21 side across 2022 to 2024. A goal every other game at that level is not proof of anything, but it is the reason clubs kept calling.
Perth Glory signed him on a two-year contract in June 2024. The spell did not run its course - the contract was terminated by mutual consent on 6 January 2026 and he joined Central Coast Mariners, where he made 16 appearances. Then, in the summer of 2026, Veres Rivne, on a deal that runs to 30 June 2029. Four seasons of professional football in Australia behind him and a league he had almost certainly never watched in front of him.
The international file is where his case is strongest. Blair has eight caps and five goals for the Olyroos, and the bulk of that return came in one afternoon: four goals in 43 minutes, including a 41-minute hat-trick, in Australia's 14-0 win over Northern Mariana Islands in 2026 AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualifying. I am not going to pretend that opposition tells me much. What the wider campaign tells me is more useful - Australia qualified without conceding, scored twenty, and Blair finished as the leading scorer of the qualifying group. He was then part of the squad that went to the U-23 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.
On the pitch he is a runner, not a hold-up striker. His movement across the last defender is the sharpest part of his game and he attacks the near post more willingly than most Australian forwards of his age, who are still coached to drop and link. He works: the defensive contribution numbers from his opening weeks in Ukraine sit well above the league average for his position, and his aerial duel rate is solid rather than dominant for a forward of his height. The concerns are touches and chance creation. He is involved in the game less often than a centre-forward should be, and when the ball does not arrive in behind, he can drift out of ninety minutes entirely.
The early Ukrainian returns are what you would expect and I will state them plainly rather than dress them up: three league appearances, 244 minutes, no goals and no assists at the time of writing. That is not a verdict, it is a starting line. A striker learning a new language, a new tempo and a new set of defensive habits in a league where the physical baseline is higher than the A-League needs a full autumn before anyone judges him. My own marker is the winter break. If he has started ten league matches by then, the move works. If he is a substitute by October, the file changes shape.
Scout tavsiyesi: Keep the file open and revisit it at the Ukrainian winter break. The profile is genuine - a mobile, hard-running centre-forward with a proven scoring habit at youth and reserve level and the nerve to take an unfashionable move at 22. The open questions are involvement and physical retention against stronger centre-backs. Ten league starts before December would make this the most instructive Australian transfer of the year; a substitute role by October would push the file back to observation only.
