Australian football has a habit of exporting its brightest teenagers and importing them back once Europe has done the hard part. Paul Okon-Engstler is the newest example. Born 2005, son of former Socceroos captain Paul Okon, he spent his formative years inside Benfica's system and the Portuguese second division before signing a three-year deal with Sydney FC in July 2025. By June 2026 he had earned a senior Socceroos call-up.
On the pitch he is a left-footed defensive midfielder who reads the game before he receives it. His first move is almost always to open his body and play forward; under pressure he rarely takes the safe square ball for its own sake. The Benfica schooling shows in his positional discipline: he screens the back line, steps into passing lanes and controls tempo without having to run through it.
The development areas are physical and rhythmic. Duel intensity in Europe's top divisions is a different test to the A-League, and his upper-body strength against grown midfielders is still filling out. He can also drift out of the highest-tempo phases, holding the ball a beat too long when the game accelerates.
For European sporting directors the file is straightforward: a technically mature holding midfielder, connected to the European pathway through Benfica, available at a modest fee before A-League form inflates it. Sydney FC hold him to 2028, but the market reality for Australian talent has not changed - the right offer always moves.
Scout tavsiyesi: Low-cost, high-floor holding midfielder: open the file before A-League form raises the fee.
