For three seasons South African football has been asking the same question about Relebohile Mofokeng: not whether he was good enough for Europe, but when a European club would finally move. In July 2026 the answer came. Orlando Pirates agreed his transfer to Belgian champions Royale Union Saint-Gilloise on a four-year deal, ending the most-watched development story in the PSL.
Mofokeng, born 2004, is a left-footed number ten who also operates from the right. His last Pirates season told you why the queue formed: he produced double figures in goals and a similar tally in assists across a full league campaign, carrying a big club's creative burden at an age when most players are still rotation pieces. On the ball he is direct without being reckless; he attacks the half-space, shifts the ball onto his left early and shoots from the pocket most defenders leave open.
The move to Belgium is the honest test. The PSL rewarded his individual talent; the Belgian Pro League will demand faster decisions and stricter defensive discipline off the ball. His pressing consistency and his choices when the game slows are the two areas that will decide whether year one is a bedding-in season or a breakout.
Why it matters for the region: Mofokeng is the proof-of-concept for the entire Southern African export lane. A homegrown PSL talent moving directly to a Champions League-level Belgian side lowers the perceived risk on the next South African, Congolese or Tanzanian prospect. Track how he adapts; the market behind him is the real opportunity.
