Montevideo keeps producing strikers the way other cities produce traffic, and Liverpool FC Montevideo has quietly developed one of the most interesting of the current crop: Renzo Machado, born 2005, a right-footed No. 9 with an Italian passport in his drawer.
Machado is not a flashy dribbler. His value lives in the movements nobody films: the double run that drags a centre-back out and attacks the space behind, the early near-post dart at crosses, the first-time finish with minimal backlift. He plays like a striker who has watched a lot of penalty-box video, which in Uruguay usually means he has.
The physical base is solid: 1.82m, strong enough to hold the ball up against grown defenders, quick enough over the first five metres to win separation. What needs work is the game between the boxes. His link play is functional but slow, and when his team builds through him the tempo drops. Against deep blocks he can disappear for long stretches.
The contract runs to late 2028, which protects the club, but Uruguayan market reality is simple: the right European offer always wins. The EU passport removes the biggest friction. For mid-table European clubs looking for a low-cost, high-ceiling No. 9, this is a file to open before the January window inflates it.
Scout tavsiyesi: Open the file before January: EU passport plus sub-2m fee will not last.
