Rhys Marlon Youlley is a good example of why Australian midfielders are worth following outside the A-League too. He was born in Sydney on 13 February 2005, stands 1.84 m and plays as a central midfielder for Sydney FC. His route has been unusual for the domestic game: academy years at Sydney FC (2016 to 2018), then Western Sydney Wanderers (2018 to 2022), then the Bulls FC Academy, before a first-team debut for Macarthur FC as a substitute in a 1-0 loss to Newcastle Jets in February 2023.
The next step took him to Belgium. He joined Westerlo in 2023 and spent two seasons there; his Belgian Pro League debut came on 9 February 2025 and the career table shows five league appearances in total. That is a thin sample, and I treat it as exposure to a faster, more physical league rather than as evidence of output. He returned home on a three-year contract at Sydney FC, signed on 30 May 2025, and Wikipedia's career table lists 22 A-League appearances without a goal at the time I checked.
For Australia he has gone through the U18, U20 and U23 levels, including the 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cup and the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup. A player who has been selected for both tournaments before turning 21 has been through a real filter, even if the club numbers are modest.
What I can say from the record: a tall, ball-playing number eight profile who has already adapted to Europe and returned. What I cannot say from it is his final-third output, because the goals column is empty, so I am not going to invent a creative profile for him. The reasonable reading is a developing box-to-box or deeper-lying midfielder whose value is tied to minutes at Sydney this season. Follow his starts, not his headlines.
Scout tavsiyesi: Monitor. Decision points: whether he becomes a regular starter at Sydney FC this season, whether his goal and assist numbers move off zero, and how he performs against A-League physical midfields. Not yet a recommendation for a bid, but a name to keep on the list.
