The honest way to judge an academy in this region is not by how many boys it signs but by how many of them reach a senior shirt and keep it. Wellington Phoenix opened their academy with that promise and Xuan Loke is only the fourth graduate to move up into the men's first-team squad. That number alone tells you why I keep this file open, and why I am careful not to inflate it.
The details first. Full name Tze-Xuan Loke, born 26 March 2005 in Singapore and raised in Dunedin. He is 1.72m, 70kg, a right-back, and he wears the number 24 shirt. The path through New Zealand's club system is unusually complete: Green Island AFC from 2010, Dunedin Technical from 2014, then the Ole Football Academy at twelve years old, where he stayed until 2021. Senior football came early and low - three appearances for Western Suburbs in 2021, then eighteen matches and two goals for Lower Hutt City in 2022. He moved into the Phoenix system from Lower Hutt City on 1 March 2023.
What happened next is the part I weigh most. He spent three seasons in the reserves, forty-three appearances and five goals, and he captained the side in 2024. A reserve captaincy at nineteen is not a trophy but it is a reference, and coaches in this league hand it to the player they trust to hold a structure when nobody is watching. The first-team debut came in an Australia Cup tie against South Melbourne in August 2024. The professional contract followed on 20 December 2024, two and a half years, running to 30 June 2027. The A-League Men debut came later than the paperwork suggested it would - 18 October 2025, away at Perth Glory in a 2-2 draw.
The international record is the strongest column on the page. He was first called into the New Zealand under-19 squad for the 2024 OFC Championship, debuted against New Caledonia on 6 July 2024, started three matches and finished the tournament with a 4-0 win in the final. He was then named in the twenty-one-player squad for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, played three times and scored once. Six caps and a goal at that level, from a full-back, in a country that produces very few.
Now the limits, and they are the reason the rating stays where it is. Five senior appearances is not a sample; it is an introduction. He has been in and around the first team for two years and has not yet turned reserve authority into a run of A-League starts, and until he does, everything above is potential rather than evidence. At 1.72m he will be targeted by the taller wingers this league still builds around, and the Phoenix have a habit of using experienced full-backs when results tighten after Christmas. His contract runs to the middle of 2027, which gives him two windows to settle the question. The market has priced him at roughly 143,000 euros, which is the correct price for a player whose case has not yet been made on the pitch.
Scout tavsiyesi: Regional watch list rather than a transfer file. The academy record, the reserve captaincy and the U-20 World Cup minutes are all real, but five senior appearances cannot carry a valuation. The decision point is the second half of this A-League season: if he holds the right-back shirt through the Christmas period he becomes a genuine Oceania export candidate; if he is rotated out again the file stays open without moving.
