When people ask what the West African production line looks like at its ceiling, the current answer is a nineteen-year-old from Abidjan. Yan Diomande left the Ivorian pathway for Europe as a teenager and, in his debut Bundesliga campaign with RB Leipzig, delivered 12 goals and eight assists across 33 appearances. His market value has since climbed to a figure nobody in Abidjan would have predicted three years ago, and Premier League interest is already circling.
The tool that defines him is acceleration. Diomande attacks the outside and the inside of a full-back with the same appetite, and his ball-carrying over the first ten metres breaks defensive lines on its own. From the left he cuts onto his stronger right foot to shoot; on the counter he is a genuine transition weapon, and for a winger this raw he already finishes with unusual composure.
The gaps are the ones you expect at his age. Decision-making in the final third can turn greedy, and his defensive output off the ball comes and goes. Against a deep block, when the space behind the line disappears, his influence drops and he tends to force the dribble instead of moving the ball early.
Why this file matters beyond the player: Diomande is the benchmark the whole West African market is now priced against. Every step he takes at the top level lowers the perceived risk attached to the next Ivorian, Ghanaian or Nigerian teenager. Clubs scouting the region should treat him as the reference point, and the academies behind him as the real opportunity.
Scout tavsiyesi: Treat as the West African price benchmark; the region's academies behind him are the value.
